"Knock, Knock. Scratch, Scratch." Tragedy, Fear, Magic and Inheritance in "The Owl Service" by Alan Garner (1967)

The Owl Service : “ a kind of ghost story” ( Alan Garner, 1970) and a classic of Young Adult supernatural fiction, filmed for Granada TV in 1970 . Come and join me in an evening exploring the nature of family obligation and magical inheritance in The Owl Service, Alan Garner’s novel of the repeating patterns of fear, tragedy and love throughout the generations in a Welsh valley. We’ll be discussing the book and Garner’s adaptation for the TV serialisation produced by Peter Plummer. This is the second in an occasional series of Owl House seminars based on my ongoing work on Garner’s fiction. Bookings are open now. BOOK HERE
